STAYING SAFE - on foot
Question why would anyone want to cross the road in a place where they couldn’t see what’s coming? Answer goodness only knows. The chances of them getting to the other side safely wouldn’t be good, so why take the risk! It’s just not worth it.
Think about it:
- a blind corner: as much as people might want to (that would be a useful super power wouldn’t it?), no-one can actually see round corners and shouldn’t rely only on hearing something coming
- near the brow of a hill: just like the corners, you can’t see what’s coming and shouldn’t rely only on hearing something coming
- cars parked very closely together: if you must cross where there are cars parked and there are no other options, find a spot where there’s a bigger gap between the cars – if you just appear from a mass of cars parked by the side the road, you’re not giving yourself or any drivers very many options
Some other things to think about when walking:
- Where there’s a pavement or footpath, use it.
- If there isn’t a footpath, walk at the right hand side of the road, facing traffic coming towards you.
- Use a SAFER place to cross such as a pelican crossing, zebra crossing, puffin crossing, traffic island, underpass or lollipop person.
- Cross safely
- Always wear bright clothing at night or in bad weather.
- Know the difference between FLUORESCENT and REFLECTIVE material.
